4.1 Candidates will be able to understand concepts of information literacy and can apply those to help students and educators improve their information literacy skills on the path to becoming dialectical readers.
In ET 630 we addressed key concept 4.1 through the Critical Information Literacy Project. The website outlines a lesson that can be done with students that will help them develop their information literacy skills and become dialectical readers. With this project, we were asked to develop a lesson that helped students know what to look for in online information to help determine if the information is credible or not and how useful that information is. In the lesson, students were asked to read a website and then analyze whether that information was accurate. During the course of the lesson the students were given tools to analyze online information and were taught how to be dialectical readers. At the end of the lesson, students were asked to present the steps they would take to critically evaluate a website. So not only did the students practice evaluating information, they then had to develop a plan on how to do it and share that with others. In this project, we learned how to not only critically evaluate online information by applying a set criteria, but we also learned the importance of teaching that skill to students.
